It was probably one of the most depressing game I've played. Never liked the game for this reason (among some others).

I thought it was the greatest 'cause Tidus is so hot and the battle system is so much faster but then I lost the game for personal reasons and have not yet re-attained said game.

Beating the game is nothing special, but I would like to know how it led in to X-2 because otherwise X-2 seemed like it just popped out of somebody's perverted-bored-racketeering head at Square.

Not the saddest I`d say... If I could only recall some of old RPGs...

Who cares, as long as I don`t remember anything else let`s say thaat FF in fact is... the saddest game.

It was quite depressing, even at those time when I laughed at Tidus jokes or stuff I felt sadness too... That this happiness will have to face an end...

If the final scene(s) were directed with at least a teeny bit of competence, it could have been incredibly touching. Instead, we get a horribly cliched scene with some really neat effects. Call me jaded, but the latter half of the game had far too many "aw, come on!" moments to make the ending that sad. It's not like we didn't see it all coming. Then again, FF fans are probably conditioned to expect deus ex machina...

personally, i thought it was an extremely sad game, but it's still one of my absolute favorite games. despite the fact that i dominated jecht/final aeon with my anima... my anima had about 13k hp and did 99,999 per hit, and 86k to guys with 50% reduction =p
i sent yuna to auron's sphere grid... hehehe

I found FF7 more sad, but I suppose that was because I played it when it first came out, and used Aeris a lot. >_>

As for FFX, I laughed when Tidus 'faded away'. He was annoying, and...well just stupid. I felt sorry for Yuna, until I saw what she became in FFX-2.

What the hell are you talking about.

In each of their respective generations, FF games have always had better graphics than most games from its category.

I could understand the comment if it was just about FFX having Voice actors.

yeah, jecht was the main final boss. yu yevon was just a story closer. You couldnt die. But, a funny story about yu yevon, the last time i played X, i never botherd to teach anyone zombie attack. So when i fought yu yevon, it took ages because wenever i attacked, it just cast curaga on itself..

Why would it be sad? There's significant suggestions implied by the Fayth of the Aeons when you revisit them at their perspective temples toward the end of the game. It makes me think the good ending of X-2 was the intention of the developers from the beginning or rather that X-2 expands on the ending of X.

I would definitely say that FFX had some excitingly sad moments. But I also think that this was due to the fact where it was also the newest and most realistic FF we had played at the time. It was also the first time voice acting had been incorporated into the dialogue and the emotions expressed on the character's faces.

I believe that every FF has it's sad moments, but they just seem more prominent in FFX because of how next-gen it was for the time.

Definitely. I don't think it was quite as romantic as FFVIII, but it's much more sad because Tidus and Yuna don't get to be together in the end. The last time I beat Yu Yevon and watched the final movie, I got all misty-eyed. ;-;

I don't think FFX was the saddest game I've played. Though, I guess it depends on what people play really. If FFX is the saddest game that someone played, then it is to them. The saddest game ever, though. I seriously think other games have made tears flow more than FFX. It was good, but not that good, imo.

yerp! it was a sad game, which is why i think quite a few people didnt like the game! ;)

Aqueous
07-14-2008, 02:38 AM
I think "sad game" is wrongly dubbed - I'd be more inclined to say "sad ending". The reason why is because I never actually believed Yuna would die but I DID believe Tidus would disappear the very second he collapsed at the Fayth Scar.

For me, Metal Gear Solid 4 was a FAR more saddening game - I never felt assured of the protagonist's future whatsoever. It pulled at the heartstrings (of course, you need to have played the previous games and care about the characters) CONSTANTLY throughout it rather than just at the end.

Having said that I think FFX's ending is the best of an FF game.

sephbox
08-03-2008, 06:01 AM
I agree with Aqueous that it's the best ending of the FF line. The whole atmosphere of the game already builts up the bitter-sweet melancholy that dominates the story. I mean you pretty much know it from the opening sequence (It could be the last...) and the music, that this will not be the "happily ever after" kind of story like FF8 (which I like least out of all FF)

Frankly, I would have been pissed of at a happy ending, that's why I never even touched X-2.
So yup it's sad, but that what makes the whole story work. It's not the best game nor the saddest but definatly one of my favorite sad ending games.

Hynad
08-03-2008, 12:45 PM
I think the game is sad from start to finish.

The game is filled with melancholy and cut-scenes is which you see the characters being all hush-hush about Yuna's fate as a summoner, an aura of sadness surrounding them (easily noticeable in their in-game facial expressions). They all lost something really dear in the past (Wakka lost his brother, Lulu lost the same person as a lover, Yuna lost his father, Kimahri is an outcast, Auron is dead, Rikku is crazy...) The townsfolk are most of the time depressed about Sin, or talking and hoping for the next Calm despite knowing that a summoner has to die to bring that 10 years of repose. People do vain attempts against Sin, and are depressed over their loss, Tidus doesn't really fit in the whole time and doesn't understand the people that journeys with him, Sin is his father, for whom he have only hate because of his ruined childhood. And he sacrifices himself and his chance for love so the people of Spira can enjoy a future without Sin...

Yes, this is a sad game.

I must agree though that despite my dislike of the game, the ending is quite the best the series has offered thus far. Followed closely by IX and XII.

And Aqueous, you're absolutely right about Metal Gear Solid 4. It is the saddest game experience I have come to play so far.

The fact that at the very end of FFX you see Tidus inside the water heading for the surface (or seems to do so), doesn't mean that Square wanted to have two endings in the price of one? Those who wanted to think that Tidus wouldn't return would think so because it's not actually mentioned and those who wanted to think that Tidus would return would use the final FMV after the credits as a hint. I always considered that to be FFX ending's brilliance.

Well, I mean, Final Fantasy X-2 sort of clinches it, innit?

Oh wow, fast. I just came back to edit my post and add some relevant information on WHY FFX is sad, since this is the FFX board, but since you already posted I think I'll just make a new post instead.

You guys remember when you found out Auron was dead? Yeah. You remember when you beat Jecht and both he and Auron fades away? Yeah. You remember when Tidus is about to hug Yuna, then fades aways as he does a nosedive into the water. Yeah. I pretty much internally sobbed througout that entire period of the game.

Also, most of the characters had really sad stories too, even Kimhari. (I can never get his name right) Tidus was negeleted by his mother because of his father, who disappeared when he was like 8. Auron had to stand by and watch his two best friends die, himself not far behind. Kimahirhirrihiblahblahwhatever was an outcast of his tribe after he ran away when a rival tore his horn off. Yuna barely even knew her parents. Well, you see where I'm going with this.

Still, all of that put together doesn't compare to when The Boss died. T_T

It's a pretty sad game. Not very often you see the main character go like that, furthermore, leaving a very strong romance behind.

That being said, I didnt come close to crying at the end. I just think it was sad in hindsight. FFX-2 was pretty lame however. It should not have been so hard to have Yuna and Tidus together at the end. It shouldn't even had optional endings. There should be one ending, get them back together. That's half the reason people bought the game, and you need 100% to make it happen.

As on the topic, no, I laughed the ENTIRE first half through because Tidus is a complete fool most of the game, the game only really gets good when he realizes it's his sort of fate to save Spira and stop staring at Lulu's chest. ><

Hi ppl, who thinks FFX is the saddest game ever, who felt something when they beat it??

FFX is the saddest game ever made. I'm sad I waited in line at my game store it was released. I'm sad I handed over the $100.00 AUS to purchase it. I'm sad it was ever played in my PS2 console (My PS2 console filed for divorce from me, because of FFX). I'm sad I wasted time playing it.

However I did feel something akin to rapture when I smashed the case and used the disc as a frizzbee... and watched it fall into a woodchipper at my next door neighbours.

Ahh... it's the simple things in life that are often the best, yes?

When I finished FFVII (sheerly out of need to see if the massive plotholes could be resolved, which they werent) I felt nothing. I kind of just yawned when Aeris died, because I felt no emotional attachment with the game's annoying characters.

But X has been a different story. Although I have yet to complete it (I'm at the final battle now, just conjuring a strategy to beat him) throughout the entire game, it's been like the ultimate dystopia with no hope for resolution. I see how Spira gets its name. The "Spiral of Death", which is exactly what it is. Truly, X has the most depressing story in the series. It's true that VI is a close second, where the villain manages to destroy the world, separate the heroes, and become a demigod-like force atop a mighty tower, the heroes still win in the end. But here, from the SPOILERS I keep seeing, it doesn't look like X is going to have a very encouraging ending. Still, I'm anxious to see the results of my actions in beating this game :D At least it sounds like X-2 clears up whatever happens at the end of this game, I just won't be playing that one as it basically turns two of my favorite characters (Yuna and Rikku) into prostitutes.

I agree, the game is pretty sad. It seemed fairly neutral up until near the end when tidus learns the truth about himself.

X-2 repelled that with the 'good' ending (as long as you didn't get the 'best' ending which is dull). X-2 sucks, but is only good if you want to cheer up from the sad ending of X.

FFVII was 'Yay, the pansy with the white hair is dead!'
FFVIII was 'Yay, the pansy with the weird hair is dead!'
FFIX was 'Yay, the pansy with the purple hair is dead!'
FFX was 'Yay, the pansy behind it all is dead!'

FFXI Online is "Yay, that boss has been defeated....oh you're fucking kidding me! A new fucking expansion!"

Sorry, had to. ;)

Uh brah....7, 8, and 9 all had sad endings.

Wait...by sad you meant not sad right?

RIGHT?!

I really should've thought before I posted that; I've never even beaten VIII or V before. But I thought IX had a good ending :O And VII's, while pretty open-ended, leads you to believe it's gonna be sad, but then things turn out okay (I thought). Then again, I've only beaten VII once, so my memory's a little foggy on the ending. :O

I was thinking "well, that sucks" during that part. But despite Tidus being a whiney little bitch in the beginning, he went through a lot of changes in the game. Something most characters in FF games don't really do. And while I think about it, I'd say that FFX is one of the better FF games out there (granted, I've only beaten it once).

There was nothing about FFX which I could really concern myself with. Nothing to grab hold and keep me interested in the characters and their story. There were some areas I did get a chortle out of (Biran and Yenke taunting Kimahri for one), but they were offset by things which made me stop and say "What the fuck?" (Using Blitzball as a example here).

I'm not saying that it's not a enjoyable game or that some people love it. Just that I was saddened by spending 100$AUSD on something which I got nothing out of.

I agree that Tidus is one of the characters in the FF series who undergoes the most change, probably only next to Cecil from IV, and Squall from VIII. All of the other characters in the series are primarily the same the whole way through. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just part of who they are.

But as for X's ending, that really struck a chord with me :O Every FF I've beaten has had a nice cheery ending where everybody lives happily ever after, but then I beat X and suddenly things change :O

Also about X, I found that Yu Yevon being a complete and total wuss is definitely laughable, but not totally without logic; after all, he needs Sin to protect him, right? A lot of people say he's just a joke battle; well, yea, he is, but it wouldn't make much sense for him to be too terribly strong when he's had to use Sin to do all the dirty work for him.

IMO, the Jecht battle was so important in the game, I'm glad they didn't follow that one up with another tough boss fight. The Yu Yevon fight is all about the releasing of the Aeons from their sleep, and in fact is move interactive movie than game, seeing as how you can't die. ;)

I'm probably late on this discussion but I don't think nor ever have thought of X as being the saddest final fantasy, if it's in terms of the ending (concerning Tidus) (edit: I just remembered about the Ronsos)I can think of several FFs that 'could' be considered the saddest: (i'm not trying to seem like a "know-it-all" smartass.)

II should already have an award in this category, most of your guest members meet an unfortunate end: Josef, Minwu, etc.

for IV, Lots of unfortunate happenings here, Rydia's mother is killed, Tellah's daughter dies, then he dies, the guests like in II all made sad yet heroic sacrifices...i guess that counts.

for VI there's Cyan's family dying, Locke's sweetheart, Terra lived a pretty shitty life iirc

then there's the others...I think it is mainly a preference since all of the FF's (ttbomk) "could" qualify, imo I was more touched by the tragedies in IV than the ones in X though it doesn't that I don't think Seymour Guano (joke) isn't a bastard.

Truly a remarkable game despite the sad ending and horrible sequel following it. As a game designer i have respect for this game because if you think the video games for playstation 2 when it first release or better yet the previous final fantasy before X, you can tell this game has more detail and alot of work went it to it. Gameplay, Environment, Characters, and an amazing Soundtrack.

Any FF ending can arguably be the saddest, same with the soundtracks (I honestly didn't find X soundtrack to be all that great). But the FF endings usually do have a "happy ending" despite what happened during the game and X did break that mold...sort of. It broke that mold as in the love story didn't have the happy ending (unlike VIII or IX), but arguably the same can be said for VII. It all depends on how you view it I guess, but I certainly did not find X to be the saddest in the series.

I haven't beaten or even played all of the FF games so I won't say whether this ending was the saddest or not. But I do think it was kind of depressing.

I haven't encountered much of a sad ending in any FF game, there have been some 'sad' things have happened in them, but overall they came across to me as rather... 'meh'. The Sony Generation of FF's, seem to have been tailored more for the younger generation of players, or people new to the series.

The FF series features much sacrifice and inevitably a lot of characters who wind up dead, but I always felt that the end typically solidifies the outcome of their sacrifice in a way that just wouldn't have hit home had they stayed around. Take FFII for example. Almost everyone the party travels with finds an early demise at some point. However (speaking as someone who has only played the Dawn of Souls remake), they all come back together in the afterlife to help vanquish the villain once and for all. They're not just gone forever; their battle continues. In FFIV, the same thing happens, only most of the characters who we believed were dead make a return later on. And those who did die help the player from the afterlife (another similarity between the games that I should add to my thread about that, wherever it is). Now, I suppose the thing that makes FFX so much more of an emotional and lasting experience is that even though Tidus comes across as a naive and clumsy character at first, he changes probably the most out of any main character in the entire series. Sure you had Squall from FFVIII, who undergoes quite the transformation as his journey goes on, but Tidus seems to leave the most impression on us as the player when his adventure comes to a shocking close at the end. It's the ultimate sacrifice; he knows he's not going to make it to see another day with his friends after they've stopped the world's terror in its tracks, but yet he never once complains about it, he just takes it as an inevitability and proceeds with his task. Of course, you have to be one of those people who doesn't let his annoyingly youthful nature for the majority of the game get to you, like I didn't. I guess it's just that I share a lot of his personality traits and would probably react no differently than he given his circumstances. So with all of this in mind, seeing this character who the players has led on an epic journey, met lots of allies with, and watched grow and develop into someone bigger and better than they were to start with, suddenly lose the right to see the outcome of their actions can make for a rather disheartening experience when all is said and done. The same can be said for Crisis Core. I suppose it would have little difference if it were one of FFIV's many characters we were following across their entire journey that ends with their demise. FFX may end on a sad note, but it sure hits home in every way (imo).

FFX bittersweet? Maybe... guess I'm just biased against the PS2 versions of FF. From my perspective, the series ended with IX.

Greg, You just don't like Tidus is what it is ;D I can understand why, and I guess I find him a great character because he and I are a lot alike (so much so it's scary :O) but you'd probably have gotten a lot more enjoyment out of the game than you realize if Tidus hadn't been as . . . flamboyant as he is.

Play and beat VIII. Right now. My favorite Final Fantasy. And on topic, I wasn't a big fan of Tidus at all early on, but the game grew on me. The ending was pretty sad, I watch it on youtube every once in a while.

No, it's not just Tidus as why I hate this game. He is one of the reasons I hate the game. The others: Weak story, unlikable characters (only three made it any good (Auron, Lulu and Kimahri), the rest of the party and even the NPC's were weak and lacklustre) and I didn't like the gameplay either. Add in the most unbelievable mini game ever conceived (IE: Blitzball), as well as the damn sphere grid, and this game does absolutely nothing for me. IMO (and I don't care what anyone else has to say regarding this), FFX marked the beginning of the end for SE.

The ending was definately one of the saddest in video game history. Even though it was somewhat predictable after a certain point in the game and was a bit on the short side, it was damn beautiful. I don't want to spoil it, but Yuna's "I love you" nearly brought a tear to my eye.

I know I bawled like a baby when the ending I didn't want to see was happening right in front of my eyes... at that time I was just 17, and it was the saddest game I ever played because it actually had me feeling so distraught and heartbroken. Maybe I'm saying this because I was a big Tidus fan back then, but I also felt it for Yuna who deserved her happy ending.

It is very sad, but FFVII: Crisis Core was sadder.
However, it did leave me crying like a baby. And the story stays with you waaaaaaay after you finish the game.
Actually it didn't upset me as much that Tidus goes away, than the way Yuna was feeling at the end. And whenever Yuna cried, I cried. Especially in Macalania and at the end. It was very sad.
But then again, every Square game I've played is.
